Progression in free hand drawing.

Hi, all!

I've been waiting to do this post for about a week now and am very excited. I am not ashamed to say that this is my best free hand portrait so far, and looking back when i first started ten months ago, and very proud to display this for everyone to see.

This post will show a progression of the steps I took to complete my latest character portrait as well as a comparison to what I did ten months ago and in between.

Okay, so it turns out that I have somehow misplaced the photos that I took that displayed the complete process, but I have managed to find a couple, including the final, completed piece.

I can tell you however, that I simply began by dividing the page into quarters then took measurements from the picture and scaled them up.

I mostly just alternated between a 2B and 6B pencil.

To get the finishing touches, my wife went out and bought a lead pencil and a knead-able eraser, both of which are absolutely amazing and essential for portraits. I recommend that every artist gets at least one of each of these.
There were a few adjustment I had to make, most notably the eyes and jaw, but I feel I am still making progress and am very proud of this piece.

Kairo and Abstract Art

After playing through Kairo (Richard Perrin, October 2012) I found that while it lacked a lot in gameplay (it was extremely confusing at some points and way too simple in others) some of the shapes I actually found quite pleasing. The sheer variety of abstract shapes that the creator managed to achieve with simple cubes was very surprising. However, in terms of abstraction I honestly believe Kairo represents abstract art quite successfully. All of the levels use minimalistic shapes to convey an idea or image of something recognisable to the player. One such example is the level in which the player finds themselves in a garden type area with trees made of intermittently placed cubes. Baked Lighting in Unreal

This blog post will revolve around using baked lighting in Unreal engine 4 to create an interesting scene from purely grey materials. This exercise was a lot of fun and taught me a lot about how to utilise baked light maps from maya to give more detailed lighting on objects. I also leaned a fair amount about the lighting in Unreal such as using a plane in conjunction with a spotlight to reflect color onto an object from outside the scene.
